Avery

This page has undergone a major change. I previously had the Avery line a little wrong. For a very long time I did not know who Virgil Avery's parents were -- I had been working on a prepoderance of evidence which, as it turns out was wrong! Thanks to a cousin however, I was able to obtain copies of Virgil and Ella's obituaries which had definative information about both of their parents. Thanks Shirley!

I still believe that the Avery's/Every's in Ulster County are descendants of Edward Avery (b. 1650) who came to New York from Cornwall England in the late 1600's. I have Edward's descendants traced to a certain point but as yet have not be able to link them to my line of Avery's.

Below is the Avery line that I have definative information on. I believe I also know who Joseph Avery's brothers were, but am waiting until I feel more sure of the information before publishing it to the website.

Descendants of Joseph Avery

JOSEPH AVERY was born 1825. He married MARY E. DAVIS, daughter of WILLIAM DAVIS and WYNCHY. She was born 1829 in Shokan, Ulster County, New York.

***I have recently discovered information regarding the death(s) of Joseph Avery and Mary Davis Avery. I am awaiting their death certificates. I am hopeful that Joseph's death certificate will provide information regarding his parents.

Joseph Avery and Mary E. Davis had the following children:

i. JOSEPHINE AVERY was born in 1855 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. She died 12 May 1897 in Shokan. She married GEORGE M SMEDES. He was born in 1850 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York.

ii. WILLARD AVERY was born in 1857 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. He died on 13 Oct 1936 in Walden, Orange, New York, USA. He married (1) MARGARET EVANS, daughter of Andrew Evans and Martha J. Gillespie on 11 Oct 1910 in Newburgh, Orange County, NY. She was born in 1869 in Ulster County, New York. He married ELIZA REEVES.

iii. VIRGIL AVERY was born in 1860 in Krumville, Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. He died on 02 Oct 1930 in Ellenville, Ny. He married Ella Sherman, daughter of Jacob E. Sherman and Jane E. De Groodt on 01 Jan 1885 in First Dutch Reformed Church, Town of Rochester, Ulster County, Ny. She was born on 17 Nov 1866 in Ulster County, NY. She died on 14 Aug 1939 in Ellenville, Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, NY.

iv. RACHEL AVERY was born in 1861 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. She died on 22 Jul 1934 in Olive Bridge, Ulster County, New York. She married JAMES DENNISON. She married JAMES COONS.

v. JUDSON AVERY was born in 1871 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. He died on 27 Jul 1942 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA. He married ELLA ROOSA. She was born in 1876. She died in 1950 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA.

JOSEPHINE AVERY (Joseph) was born in 1855 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. She died before 1920. She married GEORGE M SMEDES. He was born in 1850 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York.

George M Smedes and Josephine Avery had the following children:

i. ADDIE3 SMEDES was born in 1873. She married JOHN KELDER.

ii. MAGGIE SMEDES was born in 1875. She married MARCUS KROM. He was born in 1868.

WILLARD AVERY (Joseph) was born in 1857 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. He died on 13 Oct 1936 in Walden, Orange, New York, USA. He married (1) MARGARET EVANS, daughter of Andrew Evans and Martha J. Gillespie on 11 Oct 1910 in Newburgh, Orange County, NY. She was born in 1869 in Ulster County, New York. He married ELIZA REEVES.

Notes for Willard Avery:

From the Middletown Times Herald dated Oct. 14, 1936

"Walden:

Willard Avery, 80, a resident here for thirty years died yesterday after a long illness. He was born in Olive, Ulster County a son of Joseph and Mary (Davis) Avery and has been employed in the material room of the Walden Knife Co. He was a member of the Partiotic Sons of America and the Walden Sick and Burial Society. Surviving relatives are one son, Oscar of Rocky Hill, CT.; two daughters, Josephine Evans of Walden and Dorothy Avery of NY; one brother, Judson Avery of Tillson; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Josephine Bride and Mrs. Herbert Androvette of Walden; two stepsons, Willard McBrier of Cornwall. Funeral sevices will be Friday afternoonat 2:00 in the Millspaugh Funeral Home here, interment will be in the Walker Valley Cemetery."

Notes for Margaret Evans:

Margaret Evans was widowed when she married Willard Avery. Her name on the marriage record appears as Margaret Smith McBriar. It is unknown what the "Smith" stands for, but it is assumed that McBriar is her former married name.

              i. JOSEPHINE AVERY was born in 1886 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. She married (1) JOSEPH TRACY OLDHAM, son of Joseph A. Oldham and Catharine M. Minard on 13 Oct 1910 in Newburgh, Orange County, NY. He was born in 1885 in Walden, Orange, New York, USA. She married UNKNWN EVANS.

VIRGIL AVERY (Joseph) was born in 1860 in Krumville, Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. He died on 02 Oct 1930 in Ellenville, Ny. He married Ella Sherman, daughter of Jacob E.           From the Kingston Daily Freeman dated Oct. 15 1949

"Evelyn Avery Penny died in Middletown Monday following a heart attack. Services were held at the Pulling Funeral Home, Ellenville, conducted by the Rev. J. Elmer Cates Thursday afternoon with burial in the Ellenville Cemetery. Mrs. Penny was born in Kerhonkson July 20, 1893, daughter of Virgil and Ella Sherman Avery. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Henry Miller of Ellenville; four brothers, Elmer and Cecil of Ellenville and Edward and Harry of Middletown; a niece and a nephew."

                iii.   TESSA AVERY was born on 29 Nov 1896 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, NY. She died in May 1980 in Napanoch, NY. She married Henry Miller, son of Abraham Miller and Dora Wright on 22 Nov 1913. He was born in 1892.

               iv   HARRY (TIM) AVERY was born on 14 Dec 1902 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, NY. He died in Jul 1975 in Ulster County, NY. He married Louise A. Wilber on 11 Nov 1921 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, NY.

              v.   EDWARD AVERY was born on 27 Mar 1905 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, NY. He died in May 1974 in Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, CA.. He married MADELINE. She was born on 03 Aug 1907. She died on 23 Jan 1976 in Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, CA.

              vi.   ELMER AVERY was born on 27 Mar 1905 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, NY. He died on 31 May 1988 in Napanoch, NY. He married DORIS BRASSET. He married HELEN SCARSFAVA.

              vii.   CECIL AVERY was born on 05 Mar 1909 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York. He died on 18 Jan 1984 in Ellenville, Ulster County, NY. He married (1)ELIZABETH RUTSKI HOPKINS; (2) HELEN MAE BENNETT. Helen M Bennett was born on 04 Oct 1929 in Ellenville, Ulster County, NY. She died on 16 Apr 2011 in Ellenville, Ulster County, NY.

RACHEL AVERY (Joseph) was born in 1861 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. She died on 22 Jul 1934 in Olive Bridge, Ulster County, New York. She married JAMES DENNISON. She married JAMES COONS.

          From the Kingston Daily Freeman -- dated July 24, 1934

     "Rachel Dennison, widow of James Dennison died at the home of Mrs. Mina Trowbridge of Olive Bridge on Sunday, July 22, aged 72. She is survived by one son, Harry Coons of High Falls; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Jane Morse of Maplewood, Mrs. Fannie Rippalone of East Hartford, CT.; two brothers, Judson Avery of Tillson and Willard Avery of Walden; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The funeral service will be held from the Krumville Church at 3 o'clock. Interment will be at the Krumville cemetery."

James Dennison and Rachel Avery had the following children:

       i     MARY JANE DENNISON. She married UNKNWN MORSE.

       ii    FANNIE DENNISON. She married UNKNWN RIPPALONE.

James Coons and Rachel Avery had the following child:

JUDSON AVERY (Joseph) was born in 1871 in Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York. He died on

27 Jul 1942 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA. He married ELLA ROOSA. She was born in 1876. She died in 1950 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA.

Judson Avery and Ella Roosa had the following children:

     i    MYRTLE AVERY was born in 1901. She married GEORGE ANDERSON.

     ii   NELLIE AVERY was born in 1909. She married John B Glennon on 29 Apr 1932 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York.

     iii OTIS AVERY was born in 1897 in Rosendale, Ulster, New York, USA. He married Alma Dane Yarrow, daughter of John Yarrow and Etta Munson on 26 Aug 1918 in Rosendale, Ulster, New York, USA. She was born in 1899 in Ellenville, Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, NY.

     iv   GEORGE J AVERY. He married Catherine Fahey, daughter of James Fahey on 26 Jun 1931 in Rosendale, Ulster, New York, USA. She was born in New York City, NY.

     v    BABY BOY AVERY was born on 31 Dec 1920. He died before 1925.

Notes for Baby boy Avery:

In the Tillson section of the Jan. 15, 1921 Kinston Daily Freeman:

"Mr. and Mrs. Judson Avery are receiving congratulations over the arrival of a son born Dec. 31. Mother and son are doing as well as can be expected."

This child is not found in the 1925 NY Census or 1930 Federal Census -- it is assumed the child did not survive.

ADDIE SMEDES (Josephine Avery, Joseph Avery) was born in 1873. She married JOHN KELDER.

     i    EDORA M KELDER was born in 1893 in Ulster County, New York. She married Jason E Grey, son of Montscena Grey and Ella Bishop on 25 Jun 1910 in Ulster County, New York. He was born in 1889.

MAGGIE SMEDES (Josephine Avery, Joseph Avery) was born in 1875. She married MARCUS KROM. He was born in 1868.

     i.   HELEN KROM was born in 1901 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA.

     ii   HAZEL KROM was born in 1894 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA. She married Davis Merrihew, son of Stephen Merrihew and Rowena Davis on 20 Feb 1913 in Walden, Orange, New York, USA. He was born in 1884 in Ulster County, New York.

     iii GEORGE KROM was born in 1906 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA.

     iv   CHARLES KROM was born in 1907 in Tillson, Ulster, New York, USA.

MARTHA AVERY (Virgil, Joseph) was born in 1891 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, NY. She died in Aug 1974 in Nassau County, NY. She married IRVING BURGER. He was born in 1874.

CECIl AVERY (Virgil, Joseph) was born on 05 Mar 1909 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York. He died on 18 Jan 1984 in Ellenville, Ulster County, NY. He met HELEN MAE BENNETT. She was born on 04 Oct 1929 in Ellenville, Ulster County, NY. She died on 16 Apr 2011 in Ellenville, Ulster County, NY. He married ELIZABETH RUTSKI.
