Notes for MATTHYS (MATTHEW) BLANCHAN:

In 1635 Matthys moved to Armentiers, France, near the Belgian border and married Magdalena.

It seems that the Blanchans travelled back and forth between England [primarily Canterbury] and Manheim Germany.  Matthys' daugher Magdaline was baptized at the Walloons Church in Canerbury...then

Matthys was a Deacon in Pastor Benedict de Benson's Huguenot Church in Manheim in 1651 and 1652...his daughter Maria's marriage took place in Canterbury [** see below]

The dates are unknown, but sometime between 1635 and 1660 the Blanchans lived in England and owed land there.  They retained the ownership of this land.[**This information was stated in Matthys' Will dated 8/22/1671]

It is believed that they lived in Canterbury, England in 1660 as Matthys' daughter Maria's marriage to Antoine Crispell is recorded in the Walloons ["strangers"] Church of Canterbury.

They sailed for America 27 April 1660 on a shipped called the Guilded Otter.  With him were his wife and daugher Catherine with her husband Louis Du Bois, daughter Maria with her husband Antoine Crispel, daughters  Magdaline, age 12, and Elizabeth age 9 and son Matthys Jr., age 5.

Governor Stuyvesant personally welcomed them and gave Matthys a letter of introduction to present to Sgt. Romp at Esopus directing him to provide them with accomidations.

He and his family settled in Hurley where he was a farmer and a "distiller".

On June 7, 1663 the villiage was attacked by indians and Matthys sife and two of his children were taken captive, but were recovered by Captain Martin Creiger's expedition -- in which Matthys himself and his two son's-in-law participated.

On October 6, 1666 Jan Oosterhoudt conveyed to Matthys a house and lot in Wiltwyck (Kingston).  Another house was later bought from Governor Nichols in 1667

Notes for LOUIS DU BOIS:

Louis and family arrived in America in 1660 where he quick rose to prominance in local civic and religious affairs.

He and two of his sons are listed on among the twelve patentees of the New Paltz Patent, having received this grant from Governor Andros on September 6, 1677.

Louis was a member of the first court of sessions held in Kingston.  As early as the late 1600's Louis was creating an uproar in the sessions demanding that the English provide representation or they would not pay taxes to them.  Unfortunately his idea came nearly 100 years before country was actually ready for it!  For creating a disturbance in the court of sessions with his radical ideas he lost his commission.

Louis headed several of the expeditions in the indian wars.  During the Esopus war of 1663 Louis' wife Catherine and three of his children were taken captive.  A story has held that while in captivity [for nearly 10 weeks] the indians finally decided to kill their captives by burning them at the stake.  While tied to the stake with her baby Sarah she began to sing the 137th Psalm.  The story goes that the indians were so inthrall by  her beautiful singing that rather than light the fire they demanded that she sing more.  She sang until the rescue party arrived, surprising the indians.

Louis Dubois was one of the founders and the first elder of the Dutch Reformed Church at New Paltz
